Simple Gestures Directors’ statement
The film is a portrait of Janusz Bałdyga, one of the most recognizable Polish performers. The artist uses the simplest means of expression, performs such simple gestures that each of us makes every day: takes steps, claps, lifts a heavy object, rolls up a string. The film consists of a dozen or so short chapters that are self-reflection on elementary problems of art, which we find unexpectedly close to everyday life.The film has a box in a box structure: the artist is at the same time the subject of the film, but also an observer of his actions and finally a narrator who combines the whole with a self-commentary. Bałdyga is at the same time the author and the recipient, a viewer, just like each of us. He gently and convincingly introduces us to the world of art and concludes that an artist is, above all, a human being, and only a human being is able to make art.
BIOGRAPHIES
Janusz Bałdyga (born 1954) is an artist working with performance, drawing, and installations, street actions, and unique spatial projects, a practice he has been pursuing for 50 years. He is considered one of the most prominent representatives of performance art. Several years ago, he was a guest of honor (along with Marina Abramovic) at the Venice Biennale of Performance. He graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, but even during his studies, he felt that this discipline was too narrow for him – how to paint time, or gravity? How to paint clapping?
Janusz Bałdyga’s first performance was «Generał Center,» which took place on December 7, 1981, at the Dziekanka Studio. Theoretically, it referred to an imaginary Balkan general-despot, but it was clear that it also referred to Jaruzelski*. The event proved prophetic: a few days later, Jaruzelski proclaimed martial law. The performance was repeated 40 years later. And once again, he proved prophetic – shortly after, Putin attacked Ukraine.
Bałdyga’s performances were always accompanied by an inevitable tension, leaving viewers uneasy about whether the action would succeed, whether the artist’s grappling with matter would succeed. He doesn’t practice body art, doesn’t flaunt nudity, and is free from ideology and morality. He analyzes, examines, and synthesizes, using himself as both the primary tool and object of study. He focuses on the simplest of actions – clapping, steps, rolling or wrapping, holding. These actions can express everything related to the human condition, existence, behavior, possibilities, and place in society. He has exhibited his performances and other works in numerous galleries in Poland and abroad, including Germany, the Netherlands, Scotland, Austria, Russia, Taiwan, Belarus, Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Spain, Japan, Indonesia, and the USA. He is a lecturer at the University of Arts in Poznań.
*Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski was a Polish military general, politician and de facto leader of the Polish People’s Republic from 1981 until 1989, and a military dictator from 13 December 1981 until 22 July 1983. He was the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers’ Party between 1981 and 1989, making him the last leader of the Polish People’s Republic.
Paweł Sosnowski (Paweł Sosnowski (74) is an art historian, artcritic, exhibitions’ curator (curator of the Polish pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale) and author of documentaries and television programs about art. For the film «Jacek» he received an award at the Television Review of Films about Art 1987; as well as an award for a trailer of this review. He is also a pioneer of tv commercials in the Polish media and a long-time organizer of the Advertising Festival «Złote Orły”.

La película es un retrato de Janusz Bałdyga, uno de los artistas polacos más reconocidos. El artista utiliza los medios de expresión más sencillos, realiza gestos tan simples como los que cada uno de nosotros hace a diario: dar pasos, aplaudir, levantar un objeto pesado, enrollar un cordel. La película consta de una docena de capítulos cortos que son una reflexión sobre problemas elementales del arte, que encontramos inesperadamente cercanos a la vida cotidiana. La película tiene una estructura de caja dentro de otra caja: el artista es al mismo tiempo el protagonista de la película, pero también un observador de sus acciones y, finalmente, un narrador que combina el todo con un comentario propio. Bałdyga es al mismo tiempo el autor y el destinatario, un espectador, como cada uno de nosotros. Nos introduce de forma suave y convincente en el mundo del arte y concluye que un artista es, ante todo, un ser humano, y que solo un ser humano es capaz de hacer arte.

Janusz Bałdyga (nacido en 1954) es un artista que trabaja con performances, dibujos e instalaciones, acciones callejeras y proyectos espaciales únicos, una práctica que lleva realizando desde hace 50 años. Está considerado uno de los representantes más destacados del arte performativo. Hace varios años, fue invitado de honor (junto con Marina Abramovic) en la Bienal de Performance de Venecia. Se graduó en pintura en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Varsovia, pero incluso durante sus estudios sintió que esta disciplina era demasiado limitada para él: ¿cómo pintar el tiempo o la gravedad? ¿Cómo pintar un aplauso?
La primera performance de Janusz Bałdyga fue «Generał Center», que tuvo lugar el 7 de diciembre de 1981 en el estudio Dziekanka. En teoría, hacía referencia a un general déspota balcánico imaginario, pero estaba claro que también se refería a Jaruzelski*. El evento resultó profético: unos días después, Jaruzelski proclamó la ley marcial. La performance se repitió 40 años después. Y, una vez más, resultó profética: poco después, Putin atacó Ucrania.
Las actuaciones de Bałdyga siempre iban acompañadas de una tensión inevitable, que dejaba a los espectadores inquietos sobre si la acción tendría éxito, si la lucha del artista con la materia tendría éxito. No practica el arte corporal, no hace alarde de la desnudez y está libre de ideología y moralidad. Analiza, examina y sintetiza, utilizándose a sí mismo como herramienta principal y objeto de estudio. Se centra en las acciones más simples: aplaudir, dar pasos, rodar o envolver, sostener. Estas acciones pueden expresar todo lo relacionado con la condición humana, la existencia, el comportamiento, las posibilidades y el lugar en la sociedad. Ha expuesto sus actuaciones y otras obras en numerosas galerías de Polonia y del extranjero, entre ellas Alemania, Países Bajos, Escocia, Austria, Rusia, Taiwán, Bielorrusia, Suiza, Israel, Noruega, España, Japón, Indonesia y Estados Unidos. Es profesor en la Universidad de las Artes de Poznań.
*Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski fue un general del ejército polaco, político y líder de facto de la República Popular de Polonia desde 1981 hasta 1989, y dictador militar desde el 13 de diciembre de 1981 hasta el 22 de julio de 1983.
