Seeing / Se Voir

SYNOPSIS

Seeing / Se oir

6min30 video, excerpt of 17 video portraits, at what I call an Omega THRESHOLD where subtly and tangibly the eyes see/perceive suddenly oneself. “the action of nature”. We witness a shift in consciousness where the other sees. or not. a pure, authentic, human encounter with Oneself.

First Portrait series shown at Vaste et Vague Gallery, Quebec, 2023
This work is inspired by an online exercise developed during the Lockdown crisis. The practice was facilitating inner connection and the authenticity of our relationships. In an online dehumanising and alienating environnement, these encounters proved how videoconferencing can be a wonderful bonding factor.

The invitation is simple: look at your own selfie (on a large pinned screen) and pay attention to your own eyes, and see what happens. The practice is experienced with the presence of 2 or 3 witnesses on zoom, holding space and watching the humanity of this intimate process. This is an interesting perspective of the nature of action, that of seeing and revealing, or not, oneself; and the action of nature, that of diving and receiving who we simply are. The experience lasts 5 minutes for each participant.

BIO

Soufïa Bensaïd is an interdisciplinary Tuniso-Canadian artist. She was lucky enough to cross multiple cultures and social, professional environments between Tunisia, France and Canada, where she lived 20 years. Her art is at the intersection of performance art, writing, drawing, movement, poetry, video, relational esthetic, installation, site specific action. Her path invited her to question the perception gaps within different cultures and the foundation of existence. Her migrant, nomad situation made her question: How to relate with, to unify all the different reference systems? Being in relation/in relationship-to, present-with is at the foundation of her work. Her movement practice then her hearing loss invited her to perceive how present, authentic, relationships open a field of consciousness that facilitates transmission at a basic, attuned, unifying dimension.
Since 2009, she has presented exhibitions, performances, workshops, actions in the public and virtual space, publications, artist residencies in North America, Europe, India and Tunisia. She created in 2022 “It’s The Moment”, an artist residency in nature on the north coast of Tunisia, an art life laboratory dedicated to all disciplines, for doing, or not, and being.
