CONTINGENT conversation with Mariel Carranza
Born in Peru, she is part of the Los Angeles performance ecosystem where she has lived since 1980. Her work connects time, space, diverse materialities and her body in a unique happening that gravitates towards its own liminality.
Mariel Carranza
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Mariel Carranza came to Los Angeles in 1980 when she was 19 years old. She studied at Los Angeles Community College and then transferred to UCLA, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 and a Master of Fine Arts, Sculpture, in 1989. From making large sculptures and installations, his work shifted to focus on a continuing series of liquid sculptures using different mediums of organic living matter on canvas. The living matter in these works continues to evolve over time and transform into a meditative act. Performance art as a medium emerged as a way to experiment and learn about herself, her memories and stories and how her body has been impacted by her environment and how her body impacts her environment.
