Art as a “social practice” arbitrating between trauma and recovery.
A multidisciplinary artist with 30 years of experience, he integrates performance and workshop design in his construction of work with a personal sense of restorative urgency.
Rossella Matamoros
Bachelor’s degree in Painting, UCR 1983. French Government Scholarship, Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1988-89. Master of Fine Arts, George Washington University, USA, 1992, Fellow Fulbright, EE.UU. Japan Foundation Scholarship, Kyoto Seika U. 1999-2000. Aquileo J. Echeverría National Award 1998 and 2003. Participant in the Venice biennials 2003 (installation) and 2017 (performances).
Francisco Amighetti National Award 2020. He has exhibited in more than 135 exhibitions over the last 30 years individually and collectively in Costa Rica, the United States, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala and Peru. Presentations: Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Colombia, Washington DC, Japan and New York. Biennials: Venice, Italy San Juan, Puerto Rico Tijuana, Mexico Chapingo, Mexico Bienarte, Costa Rica Marte, Salvador Idearte, Honduras. Work: in drawing, sculpture, painting, installation, performance, video and costume dramaturgy and lighting design. Lines of research: human development, trauma and recovery, civic education and performing arts.

My work in the exhibition and performances is entitled, How do we look in the mirror? Are we defending institutionalism? Francisco Amighetti National Award 2020. 2021 Matamoros won an Artistic Residency on climate change, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy (MINAE and DCC), International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). Video art “THE EMBRACE” that will be exhibited next April/June, at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC) in San José. October 2021 to January 2022.
