CONTINGENT conversation with RUTH VIGUERAS BRAVO
Presentation of her book DOS MIRADAS, TRES REGISTROS
Ruth Vigueras Bravo
Ruth Vigueras Bravo is a Mexican visual artist, whose work focuses on performance art and photography. She makes site-specific urban interventions, with social and political connotations; derived from a process of autoethnographic research on the body as an interlocutor in public space. As part of her research, she teaches workshops, courses, performance and photography laboratories, in addition to participating with various publications, both printed and electronic, with essays on contemporary art and photographic work.
TWO VIEWS THREE REGISTERS: documentary reconstruction through narration, image and sound of performance in public space
Two Looks, Three Registers; It is a research-production project that revolves around the documentation of performance art and explores other discursive possibilities for its registration, with non-visual artistic supports such as: narrative and sound, this one proposed as a new documentary support. Would we be talking about the limits of documentation? Why make a documentary reconstruction of an ephemeral instant? What do you call an art that is transmitted with the body and generates new possibilities for creation? Is it called performance, action art, art with the body or expanded performance? These and other questions are raised in order to promote a reflection on performance and contemporary art. Throughout this research, various topics are addressed: the study of the city as a space for experimentation, the function of the artist as an ethnographer, performance within the expanded field and performance seen as a space to establish direct communication with the social environment. To see performance as an interstice to establish postulates about today’s society and its context.
She has participated in various performance and action art festivals in: Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, South America and South Africa. She has been invited to various congresses in South America with papers on semiotics of the arts. She received a scholarship from the National Council for Culture and the Arts in Mexico (CONACULTA) and for the Graduate Program in Arts and Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His photographic work has been awarded the 2001 Kinsa National Prize and various awards by the Orfeo Catalá of Mexico.
She has carried out artistic residencies in: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, in production and research spaces. She has a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts.
