Statement:

“I began exhibiting along with my teaching work in 1969. From 1990 I focused on performance art, and later expanded my repertoire to include photography, video art and installations. He received the Finnish State Prize for Visual Arts in 2004.

I have had several solo and group exhibitions, performances, live performances and video installations and photos in Finland and other countries.

In my works I look for the universal in personal experiences.

I was impressed by Betty Friedan’s book The Feminine Mystique in 1967 when it was translated into Finnish. Much later, looking back, I saw that my work as a performance artist has often, though not overtly, carried the feminist slogan “The personal is political”.

My ways of working have been varied: solo, duo (with Inari Virmakoski), group of three (with singers Sinikka Törmälä and Soile Iivonen), durational, participatory, durational live performance installation, performance for camera, online and most recently by invitation, an experiment with a live performance and a hologram video of it, both presented in situ in Venice at VIVAAR Venezia 2024 in April.

Producer and art critic Tuuli Penttinen-Lampisuo writes: “Hukkataival appears in live performances and performances for the camera and often highlights the ideal of lifelong work that is ingrained in women. However, the works also capture beautiful and humorous views. Hukkataival’s performances are minimalist works, like ritualistic dances involving the artist, her works, different layers of time, city dwellers and spectators. “
