CONTINGENT CONVERSATION with Director Michelle Lacombe
Initiated by Patrick Lacasse and Alexis Bellavance, VIVA! was founded in 2006 by six artist run centres from the Greater Montreal area to support the production of events dedicated to the presentation and advancement of action art practices and knowledge. Having just celebrated its eighth edition, VIVA! Art Action is a wildly convivial event that provides artists with the opportunity to meet and exchange, and invites the public to encounter action art in its most striking, lively, and avant-garde forms.
MICHELLE LACOMBE
Since graduating from Concordia University in 2006, Michelle Lacombe (Montreal, QC) has developed a unique practice located at the intersection of performance, drawing, and body art. Her works takes the form of either short-duration actions or research-based projects rooted in conceptual embodiment, and has been shown in North America, Mexico, Argentina and Europe in the context of performance events, exhibitions, and colloquiums. Her artistic practice is paralleled by a commitment to supporting undisciplined and independent forms of art making. She has been involved in co-organising a number of independent performance art events in Montreal, including Legs, Actes de disparition and On Aura. Since 2011, she is also the director of VIVA! Art Action, an international performance art festival.
