CONTINGENT conversation with Performance artist and teacher ZHOU BIN, creator of the international live art festival UP-ON, based in CHINA.

UP-ON PAA (UP-ON PERFORMANCE ART ARCHIVE)
UP-ON Archive was established in 2021. It is an independent non-profit organization that focuses on the research and promotion of performing art. Collect and preserve performing arts materials and documents with an international perspective, and classify, exhibit and study them accordingly. Also through the organization of conferences, forums, workshops, art festivals, publications and other forms of activities, to build a professional platform for the exchange of practices. The archive emphasizes that it is not a static space for storing documents, but an engine and incubator, a platform to promote the current practice of performance art and discuss the future direction.
INTERNATIONAL LIVE ART FESTIVAL UP-ON
Founded in 2008, it is committed to building an international platform for live art exchange, it has been held during 11 sessions, a total of 287 national and foreign artists participated. During the festival, artists not only create works on site, but also themed lectures and workshops are held at many universities and cultural institutions to provide public education resources for society. After years of hard work, he has managed to make the UP-ON art festival rise on the international art scene and have a good reputation and influence.
ZHOU BIN
Born in 1970 in Xi’an, China, Zhou Bin graduated from Chang’an University. Between 1994 and 1997, he worked in the Yuanmingyuan and Songzhuang Artists’ Villages. 1997 marked his move to Chengdu, where he devoted himself exclusively to performance art. Zhou Bin’s work emphasizes the experience of the body in performance artworks, giving absolute substance to the idea, whether expressing some slight feeling or dealing with the contingencies of life. His works get to the epistemological and linguistic root of performance art, emphasizing: What you say is important, but how you say it, even more so. Body language, the interaction of various media, spatial penetration, spontaneity and the event are all in medias res, ready to be used freely.
Zhou Bin has traveled extensively abroad with his performance art, investing productive time at the Tokyo Living Art Center in Japan, in Guangzhou City in Korea Museum, Renchuan Art Stage, Binhai Art Center in Singapore, Mangu Art and Culture Center, W139 Museum in Holland, Chinese Art in England Center, Moore University Museum, Seattle Action Art Space, ZAZ of Israel Performance Art Center, SAVVY Modern Art Group of Germany, Ludwig National Museum of 21st Century Art of Italy (MAXXI), KUNSTRAUM NIEDEROESTERREICH Gallery, Tanzquartier of Vienna WIEN. She has researched and performed in artist residency programs in Sweden, Belgium, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
Zhou Bin has traveled extensively abroad with his performance art, he has developed performance art. He has been consistently active in events and organizations, as well as with academic work. In 2007, Zhou Bin created Up-On Live Art Space, which produced Up-On International Live Art Festival, as well as many other countries. Since May 2012, Zhou Bin has been invited as a professor at the Sichuan School of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Sichuan University, where he teaches classes on performance. Since December 2015, he has also been invited by the Berlin of Germany Free University, as well as the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University of Applied Arts Vienna to carry out the curricula of the performing arts. In 2021 he published the monograph Teaching and Learning of the Performing Arts and founded UP-ON Archivo de Arte Escénico.

MIRROR HUANG
Mirror Huang Jingxuan Mirror was born in 1991 in Inner Mongolia. In 2016 she obtained a master’s degree in Contemporary Performing Practice at Royal Holloway, University of London, and later graduated from the British Academy of Hypnosis with a certificate in Cognitive-Behavioural Hypnotherapy. His work combines elements of acting and theater. His pieces mix the artificial with the natural, strength with softness and poetry with the absurd. By reconfiguring material reality, it blurs the boundaries between reality and dreams. Using her body to update surreal scenes and employing performance to resolve the conflicts between dream and reality. and he uses interpretation to resolve conflicts between dreams and reality, forces the consciousness to rest briefly and guides the spectators into the subconscious, breaking logic and returning to intuition, thus approaching fundamental truths.
